LITTLE RIVER LIGHT - Maine

Location: Little River Island, Cutler Harbor
Currently Operational: Yes
Height: 56 feet
Year Established: 1846

Little River Light sits quietly along the coast in Cutler Harbor, overlooking Little River and the surrounding rocky shoreline. Established in 1846, the lighthouse helped guide vessels navigating local fishing grounds and coastal traffic in eastern Maine. The current cast iron and brick tower, built in 1876, stands 41 feet tall. The original stone keeper’s house was replaced in 1888 with a new Victorian wood house, and the original dwelling was razed. The Victorian house still remains.

Like many Maine lighthouses, Little River Light was eventually automated and no longer staffed. It remains an active navigational aid today, though it’s located on private property and not generally open for tours. With its tucked-away location and understated design, Little River Light feels like a working lighthouse that’s always done its job quietly, without much fanfare.
